What was said to you by your manager could easily have been applied to me by every manager I've ever had! Mainly because with 30 years of hindsight it was true, and I wish I'd learnt sooner to "choose my battles", mind my own business and keep my gob shut more.
Might have made my working life a whole lot easier if I hadn't always been the one to challenge everything (and everyone).
Only NOW have I got the hang of it. I don't fight anyone's battles but my own, even then I don't get wound up about trivia - can't be bothered. I'm not the one to 'speak up' while others sit in the shadows any more. If something isn't run/done as efficiently as it could/should be, I don't argue the toss for improvement any more. I have a much more peaceful working life, go in, do my best, go home and forget about it until the next day - it's just a job.
If you MUST say something, stick to "I'm sorry you view me in such a negative light, but I've taken on board your comments and will try to think more carefully before speaking in the future".Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.0 -

As another has said, unless something else has happened or you feel really strongly against it, then keep your head down until your mat leave, though I would keep any details of it (perhaps write down what the conversation was, who said what, and date) so that if anything should happen in the future, you have a record of it. Otherwise, try and see through the language (she hasn't expressed herself very well, there!), and see if there is some truth to it - at the very least, it may be her perception of you and there may be a little acorn of truth there. Either way, you'll have much more important things to worry about with the impending arrival so please let that take your mind off it - it will be the most amazing time of your life!0

Thanks all.
I'm based in Australia, and my manager is in London. I would love to be a permanent member of the other team, but that team is not UK based and I'm only a surrogate member until I go back to the UK.
The more I've had time to digest what's been said the more I've taken it on board. She did definitely go about in the wrong way, and aside from the delivery, I guess I need to factor in the content. Whether I agree with her or not, she is the boss and I need to appreciate that there is a game to be played at work (to an extent) in terms of picking which battles.
Just frustrating that the suggested changes make my day to day work more difficult and have only been suggested because there is a general lack of understanding from the person suggesting them!
Tigster - yes, this is my first babyYou are right, I need to step back from work and get my head back in impending-mummy state instead....
I really appreciate all your comments though, I've been feeling so paranoid about all this and it's really knocked me. You've all added some interesting perspective, so I'm hoping I'll just learn from this and move on. Hell, I'm sure come 2 days into mat leave I'll be well over all of it!0 -

Are current processes and proceedure well documented so that anyone could pick them up with a bit of training. (essential if you are about to take time off).
Another approach to tackle the issue is to be more preemptive and suggesting changes and improvments rather than having them imposed.
The first would be to intoduce a change process part of which must be to identify the businees reasons for the change, eg inebtify the cost of change and the time/cost savings.
This gives a platform to discuss the changes and if there are negative impacts on the main business criteria.
Just because something makes your job harder does not mean the change canot have an overall positive impact on the business.0
