  • Totally confused by this thread I thought the £1200 was before housing costs not after? Any how as someone else said pop over to the Debt Free Wannabe Forum and you'll find a lovely bunch of welcoming, nice, non judgemental people to help you out if you post a SOA.

As for the initial question, yes you can get Housing Benefit on your rental part if you qualify, I live in shared ownership housing and know that my neighbours were on HB for their rent for years.

Do I need it? Can I afford it? Is it cheaper elsewhere?

Hammyman, you are either very thick or drunk.

    Where have I said I earn £2000pm?

I get £1,270 in wages. Out of that the Mortgage/rent comes to almost £900, that leaves 370 to pay for food, water, elec, gas etc. We get tax credits of £58pw but even with that we are not left with much.

As for DEBT, I have none, other than a mortgage, I have a feeling you are on a wind up. Either way you are an idiot

They can't because they have £1200 a month after housing costs to live on for a family of two, soon to be three.

Our boy is four months old, as stated in the first post. So we ARE a family of 3. Are you replying to another poster or what? I have never seen so much crap posted on one topic

They said current income is over £2000. You have your wages of £1260, SMP of £554, Child benefits of £86 and Tax Credits of £255 so currently it does total over £2000.

The benefits calculator at entitled to will tell you if you are entitled to HB and what help with childcare you would get if your partner does go back to work.

The SMP runs out very soon, thats why I am posting this now rather than say, two months ago...
  • ironman, is your fiancee going back to work? Could she go back sooner than the end of her planned maternity leave? I appreciate childcare costs then come into play but I don't know if you have any family who can help with that?

Living in London is so expensive, especially on such a relatively low wage. I know there are extra costs with moving but could you live further out of London and commute? It's what I do every day and the £3,000 annual train fare is more than covered by the extra I earn by working in London instead of locally, but the rent is so much cheaper... I see you've already cut back on other bills as much as you can. Your mortage/rent is just way too high as a percentage of your total income.

The home thing is my wages will go up quite a bit it is just taking a while as I started three years ago but work dried up for over a year so I only returned recently. I haven't been in this line of work since leaving school or anything, so didnt't get a placement in college or an apprenticeship. Basically i'll qualifly the harder way but I wenou into it as I didn't like my last job.

As for my mortgage/rent paymenents there isn't alot many places around that you can get for even what I pay. I have to have a two bed because of our baby. I don't want to move out of London as it's our home, where I Work and where our families are.
  • Fair enough. So what about your fiancee returning to work and your families possiby helping out with childcare? Would help out a lot financially until maybe your wages pick up a bit? And there is a benefit calculator on here somewhere (probably in one of the stickies at the top) where you could see if you would be entitled to anything once your fiancee's SMP stops?

I believe the SMP of £554 is about to stop, which is why they will soon be £100 short of the money needed for all bills, etc. That's why I asked about his fiancee maybe returning to work sooner, or, if not returning to the same job, getting a part time job to fit in with his work/family childcare help, to make up that difference at least.

When SMP stops, if they notify tax credits of the change as they are legally required to, the tax credit payments will go up and virtually replace the SMP.
