can I get the street light removed from my front garden??

Hi im just wondering if anyone could give me any advice. I have a council street light that has been put in my front garden. This was there when the property was puchased but since then I have been registered blind and the light affects what vision I have. I am 24 and own my property but wouldnt know where to start with regards to enquiring regarding this. As I am new to this site I am sorry if this should be posted elsewhere and if so please can someone point me in the right direction as to which folder this should be in, Many thanks

Sorry to hear about your problems. I'm not sure whereabouts in the UK you are but this info is from the Cheshire Council website:
    http://www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/transport_and_roads/roads_and_roads_maintenance/street_maintenance/faq_-_street_lighting.aspx

    Can I have a light re-sited?
The re-siting of lighting columns, whilst not impossible, is often difficult. The spacing between adjacent lights is crucial for achieving the correct lighting levels on the road. Moving one light could result in the over-lighting and under-lighting of adjacent road surfaces, thereby compromising safety. Each request is individually investigated and where necessary, consulted on, with no guarantee of a favourable outcome. It should be noted that the cost of moving a street light will normally fall on the person requesting the work.

If the light is affecting you, contact the council and see if they will fit something on the post that reduces the light shining onto your house. Our council has done this for a neighbour.

As per post 3. they normally they just fit a shield between you and the light source like this:

Have you thought about a black-out blind for the bedroom?

As post 4 said they may fit a shield as its cheaper solution

I'm not sure what use the photo may be for someone who is registered blind and probably using screen reading software!
    Wasn't just for OPs benefit.
I would request a shield be fitted immediately behind the light fitting on the lampost as has been shown two posts above.
but it seems to have helped you make your reply. :D

Good afternoon: my MIL is registered blind but a picture still says a thousand words to her.

Also I think the OP is concerned that the light is on private property. Anybody know if this is common or if permission is needed?

If the council appear reluctant then it might be worth the OP mentioning the Equality Act 2010; it may be that the council has a duty to make reasonable adjustments (i.e. without charge to the OP) for someone who I think would count as disabled for the Act's purposes. It sounds as though a shield would be a straightforward and not too costly option for them.
