I have solar panels. When the sun is shining you can put on the kettles and the TVs and the meter does not shift. When the sun is shining and you've not burning the juice the meter does not shift and the feed in tariff meter clocks up another unit every now and then.

As someone who is waiting for their panels to be installed, I've heard different things about this. One person told me that the wheel runs backwards, but not the numbers in the display; someone else told me that the numbers run backwards as well - can you clarify?

If the latter is true, then as we are planning a 9 kW installation, presumable most of the electricity we use at night will be "credited" the next day as the system produces more electricity than we consume.

There are various different meters. Some of the old mechanical ones have anti-reversing mechanism but some definately run backwards. However you do have to declare this when you sign up the FIT contract and as thenudeone mentioned they will probably come and replace it one day.
  • One poster on this forum discovered that they had a reasonably modern meter that was programmed to count the units going in both directions.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

[The Penny dropped when this Sring's endless sunshine make the consumption figure rise not fall;)].

It is a Siemens meter and the final outcome is still to be resolved (or at least we are still waiting to be told the outcome).

Another cost to factor in is maintenance. Over a ten or twenty five year period there isn't anything that won't need some sort of cost to maintain and something as fragile as this on the roof of your house is going to have to cope with the worst of the weather.
