Well, thank you all so much for your advice. I went into the bank this morning and claimed the money back and they said it will be back in tomorrow. I then called the council and they said it was the arrears from last year that they had took in addition to my usual monthly payment. Fair enough but without notice?? All I got was an apology for not sending me a notification ! it's totally knocked my usual careful budgeting, leaving me short for the rest of the month and in this day I can't afford to be short.

The bank said that they will have to debit the amount again if the council disagree with the reason for me wanting the money back in my account. it's left me wondering whether to cancel the direct debit and pay my council tax on a standing order instead as I feel like I had absolutley no control over what was being taken.

I'd go with the standing order. It gives you so much more control and you don't lose any discounts by doing it that way.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

But you might lose the right to pick your date for ct.

At my LA, only those who pay by d debit get to pick 1 of three days in the month. Everyone else has to pay 1st of the month
