Pulling out of student accommodation for september - not signed the contract

Hi everyone, I'm after a bit of advice.

Basically in mid June I found an advert for 4 girls looking for a 5th housemate for a flat they'd found. I went to meet the girls and view the flat and said I'd take it.
I've been allowed to move in from the end of June and 2 of the girls are already there and other 2 move in september. I have stayed over one night so far when we had a party.

Basically I have now decided due to not being able to afford it I can't move in due to financial problems for me and my family and no longer want the accommodation. When I spoke to the landlord when I viewed it I was told that I wouldn't have to pay any rent including the summer half rent until september, he's now changed his mind and wants the money now. There is also a problem with plumbing in one of the bathrooms which he is in no hurry to get fixed and what I did not know before was that the entrance to the flat is from the back of the property through a dark alley and there is no lighting. These factors have also put me off.

Basically, have I got the rights to pull out and not get into any trouble about it? I haven't signed a contract yet and have not paid a deposit.

If anyone can help I'd be really grateful, thanks.

You haven't signed a contract. You haven't paid any money. Therefore you are at liberty to change your mind. Tell the landlord that you have done so asap

Thanks so much, it's been really worrying me. I better get on the phone right away and talk to him. I was just worried that they might come back and say there was a 'verbal agreement' or something.

I haven't been living in the flat yet, it was available for us from the end of June but I'm still at home. I stayed over for one night when one of the girls had a party but other than that I haven't lived there and I haven't paid a penny of rent, a deposit or anything.

Who changed the conditions of the verbal agreement first, you not wanting to take the room or the LL changing payment terms? Also did you sleepover before or after the change?

Basically we were told when I viewed (mid June) by the landlord that not a penny had to be paid until september. I stayed over on the 23rd of July and the other girls said that they had been asked for the summer half rent (£300) the week before. This was not what they said when I viewed. I haven't mentioned that I don't want the room now because I wanted to see what my rights were first.

Do you have a key to the property?

No, I haven't been given one yet. Unless one of the girls who is already living there has one for me but I don't physically have a key of my own that has been given me.
