London Travel

I'm taking the kids into London for a couple of days in the summer holidays and I'm trying to work out whether its cheaper to buy a family railcard (currently £25.20) and then use an oyster card for me and a £2 daily travel card for the 11-year old (7 year old will be free) or just to get a child photo oyster card which has £10 admin fee. We're spending three days seeing the sights and staying on the outskirts in Watford so expect to be travelling a lot on the underground.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer some advice - completely confused by it all now!

PS will be just me and the 2 kids, and post divorce I'm trying to save all I can!

Not sure about the travel cards, but was your username intentional?

Not sure it's something I'd want to call myself!

    Does this help:

    Family & Friends Railcard

If you buy a Family & Friends Railcard you can buy discounted Off-Peak Day Travelcards to travel at anytime on weekends, Public Holidays and after 09:30 on Monday to Friday.

If you are travelling with children aged under 16 at anytime on weekends, Public Holidays and after 09:30 on Monday to Friday, you can get discounts for them too:
    • On Tube, DLR, London Overground and some National Rail services you can take four children aged under 11 for free
    • You can buy an Off-Peak Zone 1-9 Day Travelcard for £2 for up to four children aged 11-15 travelling with you (if they do not have an Oyster photocard). You must also have a valid ticket to travel
You wouldn't need Oyster in this case, either for yourself or the child. You'd buy a paper travel card each day.

I'm not sure you would save money overall if you bought the railcard just for this trip - you'd need to make other trips using it.

If it's only this trip then Oyster for you and a £2 travelcard each day for the child would be best, forgetting the railcard altogether
