    Oh, I'd forgotten about that! Used to do it at old house, but haven't felt the need so far to do it at this house (4 years and counting). Old house ran south - north, and the front of the house just got unbearable without opening the loft hatch.

    Our bedroom is south facing and it is unbearable even with the loft hatch open! It's driving me mad and the fan is doing overtime...

    I'm south facing. I keep all the windows shut in the day, blinds down upstairs. Come evening I fling all the windows open all over the house and by bedtime it's been cool.

    have you got a loft hatch? If you prop this open a bit a lot of the hot air will escape into the loft. It's free and certainly worth a try.
    Doesn't that only work if you've got a hole in the roof ;)
    Whenever i've been in the loft in summer its been stiffling
