Re clothes - start looking in charity shops rather than Next sale etc, when you need to get for the kids etc.
Can DH perhaps drink every other night and cut the cost by 50%?Debt at highest: £8k. Debt Free 31/12/2009. Original MFD May 2036, MF Dec 2018.0 -
I'm usually pretty good with buying clothes for the kids, I tend to get bundles from eBay or netmums or even from my local freecycle, next just kept sending me VIP invites and that's what started off the clothes buying from them, my big problem with next was if we needed something and I had credit we got it from them.
Your drinking idea is great though, I just hope he can do it without drinking more on the days he can drink.
I'm going to go through what we should be budgeting for tomorrow, obviously if I don't have any credit I can't just get what we need so it will have to be budgeted for from now on.0 -
I think you need a chat with the OH about his drinking - he sounds stressed. You need to point out to him that 1/3rd of your supermarket bill is alcohol for him - what about the other members of the family - perhaps the children would like a treat sometimes. It is also awful to live with someone dependant on drink which will likely only get worse as the years go by. This is also sending out the wrong message to your children about drinking. If he can't/won't cut back then he clearly has a problem if he is putting drink before providing for his children.0

sorry to but in, but my OH enjoys a wind down drink at the end of the day, but he tends to only have maybe a couple of tins per night and few more maybe at weekends. We find that if we get the special offers from the big supermarkets ( i.e 3 boxes lager for £20 ) 36 tins/bottles can last maybe a fortnight or more.
Just an idea, but it could save around £40 per fortnight
ps assuming OP DH drinks lager.0 -

That would last a week in our house, DH can have between 2 and 5 cans a day during the week and up to 9 a day on weekends, he finishes work at 3pm and it's the first thing he does. I buy the boxes that are on offer when I do a shop on Wednesday but by Monday he's off to the shop for more.
It's now been suggested that I should go bankrupt and DH should pay his debts off weekly/monthly as only £2k of the debt is his.0 -

That is a lot to drink. Are you sure you can afford this? Are you happy with this? DOn't mean to pry but can't help but think it mustn't be great for you if OH is drinking like that.- DFD 4th July 2015

It's not great, he doesn't see anything wrong or even thinks he's drinking too much, something happened a few weeks back and he agreed that he should cut down, which he did for about a week but he's back to his usual self now, says what's the point in working so hard if he can't have a drink when he gets home, mil has noticed and said to me she wanted to say something but thought it wasn't her place to say anything, I told her to go ahead, it might help, a few days later they dropped the kids back at home (4.30pm) and DH had opened a can, she didn't say anything, everyone agrees with me but no one backs me up.
I don't drink very often as I know any I have will mean we have to replace them for him.0
