Charging per mile

I have a 10 mile radius for a service I provide but anything after that is charable by the mile. I was thinking of the basic 40p per mile over the initial 10. Would i need to charge to the destination only or would I be able to charge for the return journey as well. Obviously if I have to travel 50 miles having to come back means 100!

Charge what you like, just make it clear to the customer when you agree the deal. Maybe phrase it as "I charge for return mileage on an actual mileage travelled basis - the first 20 miles are free, but I need to charge 50p a mile after that. Please remember I also need to get back from your location!!' Or something similar?

I think it also depends on how far you want to travel.

If you can get oodles of business next door - and you don't need to be travelling 15 miles for your business to be profitable - then you might make the travelling cost prohibitively expensive for your customers. On the other hand, if you can't get enough business otherwise you might make your 'free' travelling radius 20 miles, and bump up the general cost of your services.

As a compromise, you could say something like "within 10 miles free, Town A is £x, Town B is £y, contact me for price to other places". That way, if you want you can charge the person who lives 20 miles away down the motorway less than the person who lives at the end of a 15 mile single track lane.
