Good DIY Drill?

Options
Is the following a good quality and value drill / screwdriver? Any other suggestions? It isn't the greatest voltage, but comes with 2 batteries, so figured that compensated.

We are not far off buying a house in need of a complete refurb, so I'm probably going to be getting quite a lot of use out of it for the next 6 months.

Thanks! :T

Depends what you want to use it for. Its a good idea to get one with a hammer option as well. Weve used bosch but now use makita. For drill drivers we use the makita BHP451. They are expensive, but once you have a few chargers and batteries you can buy bare units. They are 3ah and charge in 20 minutes. We also use the makita impacts but tend to throw these away every 3 months so are changing to a big compressor and air. For a DIY situation, I wouldnt go Li Ion batteries, sure they are the best, but also cost a lot. The main point of them is the short charge time, but in a DIY situation this isnt really important as long as you have a couple of batteries, they are mainly for site work. Try the makita 8391dwpe. Its only 99 quid from B&Q and has the hammer option.

Hi: just bought that one from Screwfix on Friday....good price and should do the job for most DIY jobs. OH has a corded SDS hammer drill for the big stuff.

As said, it depends what you want to use it for. If it's just small 'easy' jobs then it will be fine. Personally I wouldn't get less than an 18v drill, any lower and they can struggle on the power front. I have a 14v drill that wont unscrew the screws that were screwed into wood studs whereas my 18v Makita handles that easily.

For complete refurbs. I would get a lithium ion bosch 18V drill driver (no hammer) and a bosch corded SDS 3 function drill. The SDS has chipping action so ideal for taking off plaster and old tiles.

Bosch do an excellent 3 year warranty, free pick and collection via fedex.

Have this one but bought from B&Q in the sale.

The only thing I'd recommend is checking which other cordless tools the battery fits. So if you're buying, say, a cordless strimmer or hedge trimmer then pay the extra for battery compatability. I didn't
  • Thanks all for your pointers. Much apprecaited.

OP, if you haven't bought anything yet, there are 2 18v drills with 2 batteries each in B&Q just now, one's a DeWalt the other is a Makita. Both reduced to £99.99.

I've got a Hitachi 12v inpact driver (came it a set with a drill driver) and i must say its the best drill i have ever owned. Its nice and light so i have managed to screw up plasterboard to the celing without getting an achy arm!

Thanks for this, I'm probably going to opt for that Makita at B&Q.....

We just bought this drill. Good price for DeWalt, however you do have to have SDS drill bits.
