You don't need to sign something to agree to a single CC transaction but the details for a one off CC shouldn't be kept by the company unless there is some kind of agreement in place for that card to be used in future.

How do you do telephone bookings then where it is a requirement to get a deposit?

The only time we have to take a deposit, is if a guest has booked 5 rooms or more. We take card details to hold the rooms only, then we need written authorisation from the card holder to continue with a CNP transaction. If they can't do that then we can't continue with the booking.
I have personally never heard of a hotel chain having to take a deposit for a booking over then phone, if they do then if the card holder calls their card issuer, they will get the money back.
That's why if someone books a special deal room rate, ie can't cancel or amend it once booked, they can't book over the phone, it has to be done via internet, where your on-line payment password is needed.

You take card details to hold rooms - what happens if the guests don't turn up?

Do you just say sod it better luck with the next one or do you use the card details to charge at least one night' tariff?
  • Hi sorry I'm not trolling anyone, I was just fuming that the hire company was able to take money from my account without permission. I'll report them to Trading Standards but it doesn't look like I can do anything else.

It's not taking money from your account. It is a credit facility - you don't have any money in the account. The CC produce a statement. If there is a transaction you didn't authorise, then you don't owe the amount of that transaction and you dispute it.

To the extent there is a fraud or breach of merchant agreement, this is between the merchant and the CC network.

You can and should do something else as per my earlier post. It's not really a TS issue if you haven't at least disputed the transaction. Then it's for the CC to prove the transaction was authorised by you (eg a CPA) or there was fraud or gross negligence on your part.
  • Come on OP did you owe the money in the first place and were you late in paying??????

    Maybe try re-reading:

On topic, if you have proof that you told them to destroy your card details then dispute the transaction, but then it just means you need to pay it again and may even have to pay interest.

If the account is fully paid for, I simply would stop using them and use a different company... or buy your own vehicle :p

It may be me but I have never come across a hotel or hotel group operating this way - have you?

If you book online you either pre pay or give your card details in case of a no show - nothing is signed.
