Help Motor Trade Insurance still not paying out for stolen vehicle

Hello,

I posted on here a while back when my car was stolen. It was under a motor trade insurance in my fathers name with myself and my mum as named drivers on the insurance. They also had a list of vehicles that were registered to our address.
The vehicle in question was one used by myself and my father but was in my name. The insurance company said that because it was in my name and not my fathers that it is not insured for theft.
We have written to the insurance company but have had nothing back in writing. We went through a broker who have said we are insured but then have told us to deal with the insurance company direct. This happened back in December but we don't seem to be getting anywhere fast.

Any help or advise would be much appreciated.

Thanks

my motor trade insurance says cars used by me must be registered in my name ie my recovery truck and the two vehicles i run for personal consumption
seems you might not get paid, look at the t@c on your original insurance proposal you agreed to

Our motor trade insurance just says that any vehicle belonging to our company is covered. Doesn't have to be registered. Hence why we don't register the 3 cars we use for our own. Unlawful, but it saves adding another keeper.

mine does too but i went back to my original insurer this year so they asked some pertinent questions and one was are these vehicles you are putting on the MID registered to your business at inception of this new business proposal
so be careful harvey if you have been with same insurer a few years because its quite likely things have moved on that you are unaware of:)

You have lost your money. It did not belong to your father or his company but you. Good luck proving it didn't.

Think the insurance company have rumbled you OP.
  • Don't think its a case of being rumbled as we went through a broker so didnt deal directly with the insurance company. Had we of known that the car had to be in my fathers name then this wouldnt have been a problem - it is merely filling out a form. The car is on the list of registered vehicles and was purchased by my father and we have a receipt to prove this.

Sorry Sadiepaw, I responded on the original post, from what I recall it's an LV policy that basically took the old Highway wording.

Vehicles have to be an asset of the business or the policyholder (unless they are in the custody or control of the policyholder for motor trade use etc etc), the fact that your dad bought it, but then transferred ownership to you will probably have no impact with insurers.

Even if your dad had booked it in for repairs, there is a likelihood to be an exclusion for vehicles owned by immediate family members. I did read and comment on the policy when you first posted, and gave a link to the wording, and suggest you have another quick read through the small print.

I'd be having a major pop at the broker though - do you have their confirmation of cover on this vehicle in writing?
