I recently upgraded my 80GB laptop from XP to 7, the hard drive is partitioned into 2 C and D drive.
I have added an external 1TB hard drive where i back up and wanted to delete or merge the C and D harddrive partition on my laptop to create more space.
Any ideas on a safe and easy way to do this please.

there are free tools available but this can be done too with Windows Disk Management -- if it's data only residing on D drive then might be wise to backup first.BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

PERSONALLY, I wouldn't mess with merging partitions using Windows, or while using a Windows system. By all means erase (and format if you like) the separate partition (D:), but I'd continue using it as a separate space. TBH it's not a bad way to setup your machine anyway: somewhat better protection for your data when the OS goes south.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0

Can i ask your reason for this please?
The two drives are split into 2 equal sizes and i now have about 4GB of space left on C drive hence why i want to merge both to create more space.Though the vision may not be the true future of man but it can't be completely beyond his control.0 -

My experience has been that when attempting it Windows doesn't like to correct its record of the partitions correctly. I lost all data on both partitions and ended up reinstalling my entire system. And not just once. If one is empty when you start it might work more cleanly.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
Just backed up on my external HD and merged the C and D drives via disk management, done a restart and laptop is working ok.
Thanks all for your help.Though the vision may not be the true future of man but it can't be completely beyond his control.0
