Oxford day trip help.

I'm planning a day trip to Oxford with some friends in late August and would appreciate any help.
Will we be able to use the park and ride at Redbridge or will it be very crowded at this time of year? We can come by train but the journey is longer.
We hope to go up St Mary's Tower for a view, see the Sheldonian and have a picnic (perhaps by the river?). I know if the weather is poor there are the museums but I am hoping for fine weather!
Do all the colleges charge an entrance fee? and are there any other suggestions for an inexpensive day out.
Thank you

Yes most colleges charge. There are some lovely pubs - try the head of the river and the turf if you are wanting "proper Oxford". I would recommend the tower it's amazing views and not too high a walk. I would also recommend punting- a great way to see Oxford and have your picnic. Remember there is a tesco and sainsburys in the centre so no need to carry picnic with you of you are tight on space. Pm me if you want any more detail- I used to live thereIf you aim for the moon if you miss at least you will land among the stars!0

Spent the weekend in Oxford, stayed at Wadham College for the night a couple of weeks ago. If you do a guided tour don't do one between 12 - 2.00 as the halls will be closed for the diners. Footprints sounds like a good idea, as you pay them if they make it interesting rather than pay the other guided tour in advance. The colleges that are open have some charges to see the halls and chaples but there is lots to see without paying. I think there are at least three towers you can climb for views over the city. We did the one with the least stairs ;-) We went by coach from Heathrow airport.Paddle No 21 :wave:0

Thornhill is often full, the others less often0
