hey guys,

i recieved a call from "microsoft" claiming they had recieved a number of error reports from my computer which caused it to run slowly etc and they were going to help me clear it .. me being super gulible believed them as my computer had been playing up over the last few days. Though i was not 100% sure so i googled ammyy and it came up legit. Has anyone heard of this? does anyone know about this? they told me to type in there website addy which i did and then they wanted me to download something from the site i refused and hung up.

https://www.ammyy.com

    Come on...it's just a scam.

If you want to give your computer the once over; Download, install, update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes' AntiMalware. When complete, choose 'Remove Selected' if there is anything to remove and Reboot your computer.

After restart(if there was anything found), open the program again and go to 'Logs'. Double click on the log produced for today and post the contents here.

Next time, just say you have to answer the door, put them on hold or put the phone down, and just leave them hanging for a few hours.

    Its a scam.

OP, go to www,whois.net and lookup that domain for yourself. You say it 'came up legit' - what does that mean? I googled 'ammyy' and 3 out of the first 10 results are postings on boards where people say ammyy are mis-representing themselves as Microsoft......

The registrar for the domain is Namecheap.com. Honestly, do you think Microsoft would be using a name that didn't have MICROSOFT in the name? Or that they'd be using a registrar like NAMECHEAP ????

Whois provides an office address and contact number but no name. If you can stand the international call rates, why not phone them back at what would be the middle of the night at their office location?

I can't believe that there is anyone left in the country (well, anyone with a PC and an internet connection) who hasn't heard of this scam by now...
It's been covered on here ad infinitum, and on many other sources, both online and in print.

    One:(

They called me a few days ago

    A slight giveaway was the gentleman's heavy foreign accent; add to that my poor hearing;
and his exasperation at me saying
'Would you repeat that please, I can't understand what you are saying'

    He hung up.

Did I do the right thing?

Don't believe anyone calling about computer problems, unless they are returning a call you've made.
