I was wondering if anyone could help give me some advice. I paid a years membership with ATL that ran April 2009 to 2010. I decided that I didn’t want to carry on with membership so I let it run past the April date thinking they would just cancel my membership. After a couple of months after April they issued me with a new membership card and informed me that a re-subscription fee would be leaving my account at the beginning of August. I then called them to explain I didn’t want to re-join/continue membership. I was told to cancel the standing order and put this in writing, which I did a week ago. Today I received a letter acknowledging my cancellation but also stating that I would have to pay until next April and they have cancelled my membership from then on. They stated that in the letter, my membership was still running. Can they do this? I find it hard to believe they can automatically take payment. What rights do I have?

Can they do this...Yes they can, assuming it is in the terms you originally signed up to.

What rights do you have.......You have the right to read what you are signing up for in future.

sounds like they renew your subscription, but they only charge you in August...so yes they are entitled to.

So what will they do if you don't pay? They might be able to pursue you in theory but are unlikely to do so in practice. As long as you don't want to be a member again I would ignore them.
