Washing Blackberries

Hi
I picked a load of blackberries from the local waste land and was wondering how I should wash them prior to jam making. ( I made sure to pick above dog height. ) I have been given a couple of bags of cooking apples from a friends' tree so will be making apple and blackberry jam for the first time.

I just out mine in a colander and rinse under the cold tap.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

That's what I'd do too. I was wondering whether there was some catch or special trick that I'd been ignorant of.

I'm sure I read somewhere on these forums about washing them to remove any creatures. I have spent the last couple of hours searching but cannot find anything. So many posts re blackberries but not the one I was thinking of. Now thinking I made it up.

Don't wash your blackberry, it ruins the battery and invalidates your warranty.

I've put them in a bowl of water before and stirred gently and any bugs have floated to the top. I've just used the last 2kg of last years blackberries from the freezer to make blackberry and apple jam, making space for more blackberries this year! :-)

Hi - Sorry to thread jump - How do you make your blackberry jam??

Ps - My mum says to soak blackberries in water for a few hours, then the bugs float to the top but a rinse and they can hang on!!

The OH is paranoid about "Things" in the blackberries.

To me it just some extra protein.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I've never made it before I've copied a few receipies from the index at the beginning of the forum and will try one of these. If you search blackberry jam loads of hits will turn up.... everything except one about washing!

Put some salt in the water and soak them for a while - rinse and go. I have tried this - it kills the bugs and didn't affect the taste. It may affect the nutritional value - does anyone know.
