Faulty car part, no response from seller

Options
Hi,

Not sure where I stand rights-wise with this so any help appreciated.

I bought a brand-new car part from an eBay shop in May 2011 for £65+£5 p&p which was listed "With full manufacturers guarantee"
Paid using Paypal, which in turn debits my Mastercard for payment.

Part arrived, all looked OK. Fitted car part (it is a wheel bearing, in case it matters) and all seemed fine. Last week the wheel bearing started squealing, and it is getting louder and louder all the time. There is obviously a fault with it.

I've emailed the seller twice, no response, and I've tried phoning the number listed on the transaction page, no answer. The sellers eBay shop is no longer operating, but they are still selling car parts on eBay (as of 20 July anyway)

I can't raise a dispute on eBay or Paypal as the 14 days are up. Can I take it up with my credit card company, or will they not be interested?

Thanks for reading.

As you are out of the 45 days paypal claim period you cant do anything via paypal. Depending on your credit card company a chargeback may work. As you paid via paypal though a lot of CC companies deem that as a third party payment so wont except chargebacks. You can but try.

Also report the seller to ebay as their contact details are incorrect. Not a big thing I know but worth doing.

You say it has a full manufacturer's guarantee.
Have you been in touch with the manufacturer?
    What was his response?

I have to say that it is very easy to damage a wheel bearing while fitting.
    Who fitted the thing?
Was it tightened to the correct torque?
Overtightening will ruin a wheel bearing in no time.

Don't know who the manufacturer is. Had the bearing fitted by a local engineering firm, so it went to them in its box and obviously I never got the box back.

Well if you have no way of contacting the manufacturer, that makes the "full manufacturer's guarantee" effectively worthless.

As the cost was less than £100, section 75 of the consumer credit act will be of no use.

The chargeback scheme run by your card company may be able to help, but because Paypal are in the chain that may not be straight forward either.

There is a bit about chargeback schemes at the bottom of MSE's Section 75 Refunds article.
