The United States of Apple: firm has more cash than US government

I don't normally quote from the Sun, but saw this on the newspaper review this morning and it amused me. A different take on the debt crisis which is smacking the US at the moment.
Here's a snippet:
THE debt crisis engulfing the US government has left it with less ready cash than computer giant Apple.
Official figures show the US Treasury has £44.8billion in cash on its books - compared with £46.3billion at Apple.
One internet blogger joked: "Well Obama isn't in charge of Apple - so no surprise!"
Finance experts yesterday said the news would increase the nervousness of money markets. They are already spooked because politicians are running out of time to agree a plan to tackle America's £8.8trillion debt.
Wall Street analyst Brett Ryan said: "The US Treasury's cash in hand varies all the time. It goes up one day and down the next.
"But people are nervous here and we're getting closer to the August 2 deadline. We still haven't had an agreement and the markets aren't taking it well."
As with all Sun articles, its often the graphics (which I can't so easily reproduce) that are the most interesting.

Now is the time to go out and have a couple of weeks worth of food IMHO. You probably won't need it but if things are going to go wrong, now and September are the most likely times in the near term.
No credit=no trade=no food.0 -
Maybe Apple could give them a payday loan to tide them over until they sort themselves out?0

I have more money than the US goverment. Their overdraft is bigger than my mortgage, you see....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

Globally the Corporate sector is cash positive. This is counterbalanced by consumers and Governments being cash negative.0

Granted. I just quoted the article because it is a bit whacky. It is rather scary that the US has let it go to the knife-edge though. The dollar was sliding on Friday and I was seeing sensible journals saying UK looked a far safer option.
Sneeze, cold, flu, pneumonia? The GDP of the US is 23% of world output. If they go pfffffft then so does everything else.0 -
