Dog (hair) Clippers

Is there any difference between these and the ones for peoples hair? Only asking because ive noticed some are made by the same big companies. Also can anyone suggest some good clippers please ,as they are expensive i would like to get some that do the job.

If you've got a small dog, a good pair of human clippers would be OK I believe. I think dog clippers may be more powerful than human ones (should be easy enough to check).

We gave up trying to use dog/human clippers on our boy and just spent a load of money and bought some horse/cow clippers. I can now shave our 40kg dog in about 10 minutes (probably less if he's not too eager to start playing with his ball again now he's not melting). Just have to be careful of the nipples, since the spacing is larger than with dog/human ones. Easy enough to just go round and tidy up with scissors/human clippers later though. Plus it's getting the hair off so he's cool, not so he looks good. I now do a few dogs in the area (friends dogs), cheap and cheerful stuff, the only reason we ask for any money is to cover some of the large expense of the clippers in the first place (but we're saving on not having to go to professionals anyway, and can do him as often as needed in the summer).

These are what we have, our dog has no problem at all with us doing him, even close to the ears. Other dogs really don't like the noise, so I guess it depends on the dog (and the owner from what I've seen).

As to sharpening, we've done probably 10-15 shaves with this and the blades still seem to go through our dogs fur with no problem, dirty/greasy fur doesn't get cut so easily, and I suspect the blades may need sharpening for next season. But obviously dogs are easier (and smaller) than horses, so it takes longer to need sharpening.

my oh used to use Remington hair clippers on our springer spaniel - but it took him ages! might be worth shelling out for a second hand pair of the professional dog clippers if you can find them (ebay perhaps? seems that everything in the world is on sale there)!
The Remingtons did last for about ten years tho - so in terms of longevity they were a bargain!
