Removing bad debt by tenant from address

I currently rent out my property and am having problems with a tenant who rented over 3 years ago. The property has been fitted with gas and electricity meters as this tenant owed money to the company and we are not allowed to change suppliers because of this. In addition, mail is still being sent to her even though I registered with MPS and have done so again.

What I am worried about is that she is a bad debtor and this will now be against my address and I, or any future tenant, will not be able to get credit. Does anyone know how I can solve this apart from writing to the companies when letters are received in her name? How can we remove a bad debtor from the address?

Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

  • Write to the companies as yourself, explain the situation and provide evidence (a Notice 21 for example) that she is no longer at the address. They will not remove your address from her records but should be able to change the meters back and allow you to switch.

    If not get CAB involved.

Debts are attached to people and not any addresses which they used to live at. What concerns me about the pre-payment meters is that the utility company may be collecting the old tenant's debt from your current tenants. I've never heard of a utility company insisting on pre-payment meters being fitted due to an old and unassociated debt. I suggest you look into this asap
