Previous tennants mail

Hi all,

After recently moving in to rented accommodation i had received several letters for the previous tenant, now i know i should have wrote "return to sender" however in my admittedly lazy attitude as each one arrived i simply threw it in the bin.

I have now had the previous tenant round complaining i haven't held their mail and they have threatened me with legal action.

Surely none of this is my problem? Should i be worried?

Many thanks.

    prove you recieved it
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Legal action?! They should have had their mail redirected if they cared so much about it. I doubt they'd have a leg to stand on in court... so I wouldn't worry.

if she wanted it that badly she would have made arrangements to have it redirected. tell her to get it sorted with royal mail and not to keep bothering you, it's not your responsibility to get it to her!

You probably have broken the law - destroying someone else's property

Whether seriously enough for anyone to do anything about it (other than complain to you) is doubtful

Agree with other posters, if were that important to them they would have organised a redirection !

Agree that it is good form to mark return to sender and repost but don't see how you can be in trouble.

Seriously, OP, I don't think you have anything to worry about. As others have said, the previous tenant ought to have made arrangements with the Royal Mail. Her idleness is not your fault.

Incidentally, I have been in my house now for almost three years and I STILL get mail for the previous tenant. This despite returning it with a letter to the senders AND posting envelopes back with 'no longer at this address - return to sender' written on it. Now, I just get rid of it via my little shredder (it's like a My Little Pony, only less forgiving!)!

Even if the former tenant in your case couldn't be bothered to go to the Post Office for mail redirection, she could AT LEAST have left a note in the house saying "please retain my mail and I'll pop 'round to collect it". She didn't even do THAT!

I may be wrong, but I think a crime only occurs if you OPEN private mail addressed to other people. But really, I wouldn't worry.

    Best wishes. x
