Any tips for Bulgaria?

I have just booked a holiday to Sunny Beach, Bulgaria which will be my first time there. I am travelling with my 16 year old daughter. I would appreciate any tips from anyone who has been.

We are self catering for 11 days and it will just be a relaxing holiday rather than lots of day trips and nights out. Any idea how much spending money to take?

Do you know Sunny beach is an 18-30s type resort ie very lively. Its been a few years since we went and it was very reasonable to eat out and buy gifts etc but you got a lot more levs to the £ than you do now, but what really stuck in my mind was you had to pay to use public toilets even in macdonalds.

Keep your wits about you at all times! I've never experienced anywhere quite so bad for rip-offs & counterfeit goods.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I shoulda done my homework before booking. I didn't realise it was a 18-30s type resort, I said I wanted a quiet beach holiday and the travel agent when going through a list of options asked if we'd stay at an 18-30s resort and I said no (neither myself or my daughter are even in this age group)

He also said it was a night flight going out there but on receiving the paper work it is an early morning flight which is going to make it much more difficult since I don't drive.

Not really looking forward to going now
  • I'm not sure if you've already jetted off or not but I'd thought I'd add my two penneth to the thread.

Sunny Beach CAN be lairy and boisterous but its not all like that. There are plenty of quieter bars and restaurants. I'm no clubber and my idea of a great night is a few drinks, maybe a cocktail or two, peoplewatching or just having a chat. I've had three wonderful holidays in Sunny Beach and I hope you enjoy yours too! My favourite bar was the Viking Bar which was right on the beach next to the pier and the Kuban hotel strip. My favourite restaurant was the Forest Hut - mixed skewers to die for!
And of course there are counterfeit goods for sale, though as long as you use your common sense you're not going to get ripped off. Ask yourself, would they really be selling a Rolex for 10Lev (approx £4 at the time) if it was real?! Erm no!

And also make sure you only change your money in the banks or the Crown Currency exchange booths. The others are a bit dodgy and its not worth the risk.

And it is true that you have to pay 50c to use toilets but all the attendants are lovely (as long as you are polite and friendly to them) and they do a good job of keeping the toilets clean and hygienic. Just keep a stash of 50c coins in your purse and you'll be fine.
