Best sandpaper for doors

I'm still battling with these doors......What is the best (but not too expensive) and the correct type of sandpaper to use to sand old doors down please? i.e.

Probably a silly question, but hey I've got some grain filler now, so going to keep trying with these old doors.

Been dipped & stripped - now very open grained

there are three main grades of sandpaper 40 grit, 80 grit and 120 grit.
40 is very course and will take off paint etc..
use 120 for fine work and even 180/240 to make a front door like number 10 downing st.

If they have been dipped you need to leave them very much alone for a while to recover. The grain opens because of the chemicals and old doors are very very dry. The grain will start to close up again although you will find that it will not close up completely all over the door.

Rather than sand them clean them first with methylated spirits and very fine wire wool. That will give you a suitable surface over which you can start to redecorate. But you must give them a bit of time to get over the harsh chemical environment they have been subjected to.
