BT starting contract without permission???!!!

I'm posting this on behalf of my mum, who is (or was) with Tesco for her home phone (as I am and we get free calls to each other). Her line rental is with BT & she was looking into getting a phone/broadband package.
She spoke to BT for a quote and that was that.
Or so she thought. After a few days she received a letter from Tesco saying they were sorry she was leaving them. She got straight on the phone to BT to say she had not confirmed she wanted to switch to them.
I called her today, and got the BT answer service. She called back and I said about this to her, and she still knew nothing about them switching it.
So, for the past few days, we've been on the phone to each other and it's cost us money which we weren't aware we were spending!
Another thing that has just passed my mind is that they may have changed her internet access as well, as she hasn't received an email I sent yesterday to her Virgin account?
Needless to say, she is furious with BT!
Has anyone else suffered a similar problem, and if so, how was it resolved? Obviously phoning them up & saying you hadn't agreed to anything doesn't actually mean that in the world of BT!!

I'd speak to Tesco and politely ask why they have breached contract by stopping provision of the service, and to get it restarted immediately.
Virgin National ADSL broadband shouldn't be affected, unless the broadband has been migrated too. In that case, the same as the above with them too.
And ignore any BT bills.0 -
thats awful! she should definetly not pay BT any money at all - she hasnt agreed to enter into a contract with them so is not contractually obliged to do anything towards them. she does need to speak to someone high up in BT though thats shocking "service", I wonder if they can trace which of their employees did this.0

When she got the letter from Tesco it would have said something like
" If you haven't agreed to move to another phone company, or if you've changed your mind and would prefer to stay with us, call us before the transfer happens and we'll be happy to help."
Did she tell Tesco to stop the transfer ?
Failing to pay BT will not help as her line rental is with them. Her voicemail service would have been with BT all the time.0
