How would rate the behaviour of the salon is treating a young girl in the way described in the below scenarios? Good / acceptable / poor or unnacceptable.
I ask because my daughter fits neatly into one of the scenarios below and I am quite cross about it.
1) An 18 year old girl working for free in a hair salon, sweeping, making tea and answering phone. No money ever given to her.
2) The same as 1) but with the occasion bit of cash for lunch and what not
3) The same as 1) but add the odd bot of cutting and a 2 day trial, where she cuts hair like a full time stylist.
4) The same girl now with her own appointment column in the apoointment book, cutting clients hair but still not being paid.

3/4 sounds like she is being taken for a ride !This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

She could become an apprentice, sounds like she is doing the workplace experience already and the employer would not have to pay more that about £90 per week.0

As with everything things are more complicated than they appear.
It started off as 1) and stayed that way for ages, but then they lost staff and gave her a trial for a job. Two days, 8 hours a day. Since then she has continued to work they same way as the trial and now has her own appointment column in the book. She told me they were trialing other people now, and she seems to have had no feedback from the trial. They have been leading her on for almost 2 months with the prospect of some "hours", i.e. paid work.
It seems to me she already has some hours, they just happen to be the same hours that her work experience were in.
I am tempted to go down there and have a quite word with the manager, but I don't want to damage any prospects she may have of a job there.
What narks me is she has never received a penny off them.I am a NumptyYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Numpty, so you need to take my word for it. Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as good advice.0 -
If she doesn't have any qualifications and 3 /4 take place, I would suggest that it's the paying customer who's being taken for a ride! If it's 1/2, I would say that she's gaining valuable experience.0

Yes I believe she has tried this and got promised they would look into it, three months ago I think now? She has been working there 1-2 days a week since Feb.I am a NumptyYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Numpty, so you need to take my word for it. Has your daughter actually addressed the issue of payment (rather than just feedback) with the manager? She's generating income for the business, but the manager probably thinks she's a little bit naive and is happy to milk the cow for free.
Do not be tempted to wade in. This is her fight, and she needs to stand up for herself.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

The scenarios are to gauge what people think are acceptable and not. As I want to be sure my opinion is reasonable.
Plus all but scenario 2) describe what has happended to her in this job anyway.
But thanks for the helpful comment. I have always found the advice "If you have not got anything useful to contribute to a conversation keep you gob shut" quite good.I am a NumptyYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Numpty, so you need to take my word for it.
