RBS chaning account without account holder's permission

This morning, a friend of mine text me to tell me RBS had sent him a letter to inform him that they had changed his bank account from their Revolve account to their Student account automatically. However, my friend has not once spoken to anyone at RBS about changing his account to a student account, so they have actually changed his account without obtaining his permission first. Can they get away with doing that, or have they broken any laws/trading standards?
P.s
I am also on the Revolve account, and will be looking for a student account soon, but I have not been changed account type, which makes this seem even more unusual.

I think you are being unfair, as well as wrong.
I investigated this a day or so ago for another thread. The Revolve account is for 11 to 18 year olds and the account Terms and Conditions include a clause enabling an upgrade at age 18.
Looking at the Student account benefits can't see why anybody wouldn't want upgraded.
Plenty info on the RBS website about Revolve account upgrade.0 -
Taken from the T&Cs
2.3 When you reach age 18, we may convert your Revolve Account to another current account in our range of accounts.

I was only investigating for a friend, thanks for your help. I don't think RBS have the best student account though; there are other banks with better offers. I think my friend was a bit concerned because he had planned to change accounts and hadn't told the bank he was going to university. Thanks for your help though.

Part of the application for a revolve account is giving authority for RBS to contact UCAS and see if the customer has applied to a university in the summer after their 18th birthday and if they have then the account is changed to a student account automatically.
Your friend could have withdrawn this authority if he/she wished. If they don't want a student account with RBS then contact them and ask for it to be put back to a select account and then open a student account wherever they want.0 -

Also taken from the banks T&Cs if this helps
7.3.2 If you apply for a full time higher education course through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service(b) we may change your existing account to a Student Royalties Account.
(UCAS), you agree that:
(a) UCAS can tell us that you have made an application and whether you are offered a confirmed place; and
