I would say that on about 40% of the times we use our NT or EH cards, we are often on the way home from an event, gym competition etc, with no real plans until we see the signposts and visit the house/castle/location. So we're out anyway and the cost to divert is minimal and we may have stopped at a restaurant/cafe/coffee shop anyway for something.

For example last Sunday we went to Eastbourne for roller blading lessons. On the way back through Battle we saw the scarecrow displays and a Falconary Display at Battle Abbey. So we stopped and had an impromptu visit. Total cost was £1 for the car park.
