The generation poorer than their parents

Perhaps the UK has too much of a fixation on housing and not enough on homes.Living for tomorrow might mean that you survive the day after.
It is always different this time. The only thing that is the same is the outcome.
Portfolios are like personalities - one that is balanced is usually preferable.

How much smaller are modern houses compared to a Victorian houses, the house I was bought up in was a 2 up 2 down terrace literally. I’m not sure what size the rooms were but definitely no more than 12 by 12. What about the rows of back to back terraces in the north. I think sometimes people look at old house with rose tinted glasses.0

A lot of houses didn't have those things because they were not the norm. Does not mean the house build was of lower quality.
Give it 40 years, will you state houses are much better quality because most have solar panels on their rooves? Regardless of how the house is built?
This is hard work.
You've dismissed an article based on ONS data because it talked about health benefits even though it did contain details about what people really spent their money on in 1970 vs 2010.
You are convinced that houses today are poorer quality today vs 1970. Not because you've some data to support that but because, in this alternate universe, double glazing, insulation and the like cannot be used in a comparison because you've decided that technological advances 'don't count'.
I'm struggling to see how people were more affluent in the '70's but if it helps maintain the illusion that things are crap now and it's the fault of BTL*/ HPI*/ Older people*/ benefits* then go for it
* pick any that apply remembering that it must alway be someone else's fault0 -

Discussing house sizes with the gentry is always going to lead to misunderstandings and confusionIt is like someone from London trying to convince a person from the north that house prices are well out of reach (Brit ?
).
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
I'd like to add
In terms of wages the first house I bought would cost about 40% more now but the mortgage rate was twice what it is now. You had to save a deposit and with the tighter lending restrictions it was just as hard to get the mortgage you required. So I don’t think it was as easy as Graham imagines.
Oh yes, the joy of a 15% mortgage, I think our mortgage went up before we completed, again in month 1 and month 2. A mortgage that had seemed affordable suddenly seemed anything but. Hey ho, the sacrifices were worth it.Sell £1500

There have always been small houses, I was born in my grandmother's house in a row of back to backs. My parents had the bedroom with a cot for me, my uncle slept in the attic and granny slept on a sofa in the kitchen/living room. Shared loo at the top of the yard. We lived there till I was 3. I think we needed less space as we had fewer things. I don't want to go back to that. Just looked at a house for sale in the road where I bought my first house. It is in good condiion so not a direct comparison to my first house. We saved a 20% deposit, because we had to. If my 19 year old and his girlfriend put their money together they would have an income of £34,000 a year the house is £120K so they would need a £24k deposit and £96k mortgage. I don't know if they would get a mortgage but it seems to compare with our finances back in the 70s. But they would have a house with a nice kitchen, double glazing and central heating. We didn't even have that when we modernised the place.Sell £1500

Cars should cost twice as much as they have twice the horsepower now.
Ipods should cost 50 times more than a walkman as you can store 50 times the music.
Double glazing should cost double as there is 2 pieces of glass.
TV's should cost x16million more as they display 16m more colours.
