Shampoo?

I get quite greasy looking hair - wash it every other day (dry shampoo in between) a friend has recommended i get a silicone free, organic shampoo. (Apprently she's read this somewhere!)

I know Tigi do a S-Factor shampoo - is this one of the right ones?!

Not tried/used the shampoo you mention but in terms of what you need, silicone free (or 'cone free as silicon comes in many forms, most of which are listed ending in the word 'cone' in the ingredience list) could help, there could however be many reasons as to why this happens to your hair and its maybe an idea to work out why as it may get you better and faster results when trying to deal with it.

It could be too many oils in a product, you may need a deep cleansing wash to 'clarify' your hair (take out all the excess product). It could be hormonal, it could be stress, pollution...etc.

When it comes to shampoos, its not so much the silicon you need to look out for, though there will be a small amount, it tends to be conditioners, masques/treatments and leave-in products which have 'cones and oils in. SLS tends to be the main concern with shampoos. Its a cleansing type of product. Too much and it may mean your scalp feels too dry and tries to even this out by producing too much oil but not enough and your hair may not feel as clean. Theres also the issue of needing to rinse it all off as products left on the scalp can cause irriration also, though some products work better if a little is left as a residue....its really hard to tell and I'd be varies from person to person!

I'd be wanting to see what else I could do myself before trying different brands as its less expensive this way!

I have the same problem, no shampoo has ever helped, although some make my hair feel cleaner than others. I hate the silicone ones (Pantene ones are terrible!), last one I tried is Tresemme natural (not 100% organic but with less chemicals), and I like it a lot. Not as expensive as pure organic ones.

I use silicone free Tigi Superstar, its the one in the bright pink bottle and they have some in TK Maxx for a good price if you wanted to try, it takes a while to get used to non silicone hair products but when you do its much better:)

So you wash your hair every day and have to use dry shampoo as well? Have I read that right?

If so, then you should see a dermatologist for advice - they will do blood tests as well if they feel it is necessary, so hormone imbalance should show up there.

I saw a dermatologist a few years ago and he isolated the problem with pull test (tugged chunks of hair out with root attached from various parts of the scalp for lab testing - ouch) and some blood tests.

You can carry on trying all these products which cost money or you can try to get to the root of the problem.

Sorry for the delay in replying

you've read it wrong lol Gets washed every other day - Use dry shampoo in between.

I wrecked my hair with a very bad perm in my teens, to keep he curls i (stupidly) washed it every day. Its took me a while to get it back to looking half decent with a wash every other day lol

I dont use products in my hair - So have ruled that out

Currently i'm 4.5 month pregnant so that isnt helping either! :rotfl:

    Hi there,

I am a huge fan of Lush products, including the solid shampoos. They are natural, and don't contain silicone. I've been using these for about ten months now....and am converted!

I had really greasy hair (well....greasy roots, and dry ends) and had to wash it everyday, but it looked greasy by the evening. Now I can leave my hair 2 - 3 days between washing, as it doesn't look greasy anymore! Very moneysaving! Lol!

I have a couple of favourites....personally I really like Squeaky Green, and find this stops my hair getting greasy. Also the Seanick ones seems to suit my hair too. Apparently Jumping Juniper is designed for greasy hair, but I've not tried this yet. See http://www.lush.co.uk/shop/product/category/path/147/handmade-hair

Alternatively if you can't get on with solid shampoo....I think the I love Juicy liquid shampoo is supposed to be fab for greasy hair...but I haven't tried this yet, so I can't comment.

Also...if you go into Lush, they normally happy to give you some free samples to try!

Hope that helps! Good luck with your search! :)

also the 'naked' range of shampoo/conditioner which are sold in boots are pretty good. theyre about a fiver a bottle, but as with all their 'salon brands' theres always offers on them (2for£8, £for@ etv etc)
  • If your hair is getting that greasy it's either a. something wrong health-wise (although if pregnant that may be one explanation!) or b. you're over-washing. Shampoos are very drying, the same way in which soaps are drying to skin, so your scalp has to compensate by producing more natural oils, this makes hair greasy and it's easy to fall into a vicious cycle of greasy hair and over-washing.

    Have you considered going shampoo-free?

There are several ways of washing your hair without using shampoo - if you go shampoo-free your hair won't get greasy as often as you won't be washing away your hairs/scalps natural oils, your hair would also be better all round; not dry, reduces damage and split ends, shinier and easier to manage, increased growth, less frizz, more definition, etc.

Plus going shampoo-free can be far cheaper too, both in buying the 'ingredients' for washing and as you'd wash less often. Also they're more natural, which is better for your health and the environment too :)

    Two common shampoo-free methods;

    1. Conditioner-only / Curly Girl Method - this is where you use only conditioner to wash your hair. You cover your hair in silicone-free conditioner and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing off. You use silicone-free conditioner - silicones coat the hair to mask the damage shampoo does, in turn it does it's own damage but that is another story, if you no longer use shampoo there's no need for silicone conditioners and in fact they'd cause build-up so be detrimental.

I use conditioner-only method and it's the best!
No greasiness when I switched from shampoo, my hair was much healthier, easier to manage, no split-ends, no longer greasy or dry at the ends, and best still it got rid of my monster frizz...so no need for me to try loads of different products or ruin my hair with straighteners every morning. I use Boots Essentials conditioner - only 60p per bottle! - which is perfect for conditioner-only washing, and great for shaving your legs too, plus the pink one also smells like candy. If I want something a bit more special I'll then use Aussies Real Volume or Naked conditioners which are cone-free too.

    2. No-poo Method - using baking soda and apple cider vinegar to wash your hair with, baking soda cleanses the scalp without being harsh so doesn't cause drying or in turn greasiness. This takes a bit more effort as you have to find a ratio to suit you and there can be a period between switching from shampoo to no-poo where hair can be greasy, but loads of people I know swear by this method.

Unfortunately Liz Earle is far from natural, it's lovely stuff and has some natural ingredients but it's not completely natural. It's the same with Lush, most people think they're completely natural but Lush are quite honest about the fact they use synthetic ingredients.

OP, if you're wanting completely natural I can recommend PureNuffStuff, especially the shampoo bars. My daughter uses lots of products on her hair and once a week she uses the shampoo bar for a really good but gentle clean.
