Travel Insurance for an infant?

Hi. We're going to the USA for 3 months with our 3-month old infant. We were wondering what Family insurance policy MSE people recommend? Any particular companies and any particular options we should choose? Thanks for your help!

I won't reccomend a particular company as I used to be in the industry and only know the company I used to work for!

The main things to look out for are medical expenses cover. Whilst you don't need £10million to cover you at least £1million is advisable in case of the worst, as hospitals are very expensive in the USA. Baggage cover will have a single item limit, so will only cover you up to £250 or whatever limit the company sets for baggage items and there is usually a rather low limit for 'valuables' eg cameras, laptops etc. Baggage isnt always covered on a 'new for old' basis rather on a current value basis.

Also check the cancellation cover provided as well, the amount and the reasons you can cancel. Usually only due to medical reasons and a few other bits and bobs. Finally if you are doing any sports make sure they are covered, as if you go skiing for example and its not noted on the policy and you end up with a breaking leg it will be rather costly to you.

One last point, ask about an excess waiver as sometimes it will work out quite well (at my old employers it was £5 to waive the excess compared to an excess of £50 per person per claim)

Always ALWAYS read the policy wording as the things you assume are there may not be and vice versa.

Thanks paulboy. I have been looking through policy wording and am trying to choose between Endsleigh and Direct Travel. I will look through the policy again and check the points you made. Thanks!
