Dog off her food

My 13mth Lakeland cross used to be on wet food and went through a period of having runny poo and so we changed her onto JWB kibble.

To start with she gobbled this down (for a few months) and in the last month or so, she's started to get picky - eats a few biscuits here and there throughout the day and never eats her full quota for the day.

Worried that she wasn't eating enough, I changed her back onto wet food, a different brand than last time, and for 3/4 days or so she gobbled this down and was fine.

The last 2 days we've come home to poo accidents in the house - clearly down to the wet food.

If I perservere with the JWB she won't starve herself will she? I presume if's she hungry, she'll eat it.

Anyone else experienced this? Is she just a fussy eater?

xDx

We found our lab (yes a fussy lab, lol) used to be like that with just kibble, although she would eat the majority, she'd be slow and leave bits, so we bought some chappie and we give her 1/4 of a tin to mix with her kibble, so its just to taste, she also gets any left overs mixed in too. You can also mix a little water with kibble, helps release the flavour. We also used to take her food away if she hadn't eaten it in 20mins, not let her pick all day. Its also not good to keep changing their food very quickly. Which is prob why you've had the accidents and runny poos. It should be done gradually over 7-10 days.

    Thanks.

We did mix her kibble with her wet food and she did only have a 1/3 of a tin a time (she gets fed twice a day).

I might try taking her food away after 20 mins as you suggest - might give her a sense of urgency!

    Hi :)

I would also double check you're feeding the correct amount for her weight. Also if you're mixing wet in with the dry for a while, you'll need to drop the amount of dry down appropriately. It's possible she could be stopping eating purely because she's full! Also, cut out any treats for a little while until her diet's stable- treats will mess with the amount she needs to be fed and sometimes dogs hold out on eating their normal food because they're looking forward to that much tastier treat later!

Thanks Rach. She eats barely a handful of kibble a day at the moment - nowhere near enough - and we've taken her off wet food completely.

She doesn't eat any treats either.

Ho hum - she seems to have loads of energy etc and isn't losing weight. Maybe she's just not hungry.

It may be worth taking her to your vet for a healthcheck just to make sure nothing is wrong. If she is normally a good eater and she has stopped then its probably worth having maybe even just a phone conversation with your vet to rule out anything else.
