My Situation - Advice Needed

in Credit cards
I am 18 years old and come from a low income family. I expect decent A-Level results in August (C's and above) in subjects including Business and Law.
However, now that I am set against the idea of University, I'm looking for a full-time job with a view to applying for apprenticeships starting next year (particularly Siemen's "SCA").
However, to give me a better chance in successfully getting a full-time job or onto an apprenticeship there's some things I will need, namely;
- A Couple of suits.
- A full driving licence.
But with the money from my part-time job not covering this, and me having no previous credit.
Is there a card/loan available to me for a short period until I can get properly earning?

Have you considered looking in Tesco or Asda for a suit? As an 18 year old with only A Levels you presumably won't be working in the City so a suit from one of these shops should more than suffice.
The driving licence itself is £17 or similar, so unless you are talking about driving lessons etc you should be able to cover the cost of the licence. Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!0 -

I'd also need to cover travel, to interviews and I'm trying to get work experience at large companies which is going to cost a lot in travel.0 -
You aren't going to get more than a £250 limit with your first card, especially if you don't have a history with your bank of a reasonable turnover through your current account.
As your first card will undoubtedly come with a high interest rate and low limit, you're going to need to rethink your funding options.
Cards designed for people in your situation are:
Capital One Classic
Aqua Mastercard
Vanquis
Barclaycard Initial
Like I say, you will have a very high interest rate and very low limit considering your age, income, and lack of credit history, if you're approved atall. These cards are designed to build credit history and aren't designed for spending.
If you do take one out you must remember that you will be paying a heck of a lot to service the debt - you should really only use these cards to spend what you can afford to repay in full at the end of the month each month.
Good luck with finding another funding source; we've all been where you are, and it is possible with perseverance and patienceCashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

I think it's great that you are wanting to 'improve' yourself, but getting into a debt that you currently have no prospect of paying back, is probably not a good idea, and aren't apprenticeships also very low-paid?
Could you convert your part-time job into full-time, do more hours? Save a bit and then start driving lessons? No immediate solution, but credit cards aren't necessarily the answer.0 -
for some of the job interviews you attend, you can ask them if they will reimburse you for the travelling cost. some do and some don't. so it's worth a try.
I remembered when i went to lots of interviews after i finished uni, around 40% of the companies paid for the travelling cost. and it was a lot for me.. i.e. for travel from London to Nottingham etc0 -
M&S do value suits for £59 (the whole thing, not just the buttons)
You could apply for an M&S store card and get your debt-career off to a flying start0 -

Hey there JDC!
Can I ask if you dont mind why now or you against going to uni?
There is a good lot of jobs that dont ask you weather you have a driving licence and until you get a full time job you might not be able to afford to buy and insure a car, you roughly need £2500.
And another thing don't get into debt to be able to drive.Santander Isa 3.2% ---- £720
