I need help with regards to JSA entitlement :(

I have suddenly found myself in a bit of a tricky situation work wise and need some advise on my JSA entitlement before I approach the job centre.

To cut a long story short I have been working as a security guard for the past 12 months (before that I was unemployed).

I am on a zero hour contract (as are many in the security industry). This has not been a problem as the firm I work for have always had plenty of work for me.

Yesterday I get told that the site I work on is cutting security and the firm I work for currently has no other locations in my city or within travelling distance (I dont drive, and even if I did I could not afford a car).

So this means from monday when I do my last shift on this site... I have no work and absolutely no income.

BUT I have not been fired or made redundant. I am sort of stuck.

I know I cant leave my job willingly or I wont be entitled to any support for 6 months if required.

So what I need to know is... can I claim income based JSA?

I currently live with my grand parents who are both retired with no income, and I do not have any savings.

What I was thinking is if I can make a claim for JSA then I can stay on the books of the people I work for until they come back to me and tell me they have a new site with above part time hours. At that point I can sign off.

It would also be my intention to search for other jobs with other firms during this period. I am just trying to see if I am entitled to any sort of safety net.

Thank you in advanced for all your help and suggestions.

You can claim JSA if you are working less than 16 hours per week.

You can claim JSA and then declare any work you've done and the income will be deducted from your JSA.

It isn't really relevant to your question but I'm sure your grandparents must have some income or else they would starve!
