Flies in vinegar??

Hi all,

I visited a Morrisons cafe day before last with a friend and had a meal. She used the vinegar that was on the table on her chips. After finishing, we were sitting having a chat and I noticed something black on the bottle, and looked to see what it was... it was a fly - on the inside! When I looked in the bottle there were 3 or 4 flies at the bottom of the bottle too. Looked at another tables vinegar and it had this too. They werent big flies, but little ones.
I took the bottle up to the cafe manager who said that 'this sometimes happens' and thanks for letting her know? I get the feeling she would just put the bottle back out when I went away.

I dont usually use vinegar so I wouldnt know, but is she right does this happen? To be honest I dont think it should be happening as I am well aware of the germs that flies carry.

Any suggestions?

Thanks all

  • what gave you that feeling?

I would imagine that most people would dispose of the contents and / or bottles.

If you are concerned then talk to local Environmental Health department.

Unfortunately these type of flies (fruit flies probably) are attracted to vinegar bottles. So yes this does happen.

Perhaps they were angry flies, with a chip on their shoulders? :D

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

Yes, this does happen. I used to work in a pub and one of the jobs I was given was seiving all of the vinegar bottles to get the flies out and returning the vinegar to the bottles. Disgusting. Needless to say I never have vinegar unless it comes in a little sachet.
