Be careful about AA or RAC basic cover. They are usually useless to most people. Most people will need all three services: roadside, recovery & at home (or their AA equivalents).
If you don't have At Home, you can forget breaking down within 3 miles of your home which is pretty much where most people break down when doing their normal in and about town trips.
If you don't have Recovery, then if you break down at most you'll be towed to the nearest garage. Problem is that you're not likely to be familiar with it and if you breakdown outside of garage opening hours, e.g. taking a trip down the motorway to a friends, having your car towed to the nearest garage is pretty much useless.
If you go for breakdown cover, you need all three options and then find the best deal. Currently RAC are giving free At Home which drastically brings down the cost. Also look for Tesco Clubard offers which quadruple the value of your points.

Assistance if you have broken down more than " ¼" mile from your home.
If your car can't be fixed by the roadside, we'll take you and your car to the nearest garage or an alternative destination, provided this is no further.0 -
Don't know where you got 3 miles from, both RAC and AA will provide assisstance provided you have broken down 1/4 of a mile or more from your home address. Whenever I have broken down at home, it's been trivial to push the car a few yards along so I can call the AA out. No need for the 'At Home' option.poppy100

I made 3 miles up. I always do that.It is 1/4 mile, but people always think that they don't need at home. Someone always replies that pushing their car 1/4 of a mile is no big deal.
Now imagine your girlfriend / wife / mum etc doing that. Isn't going to happen!
People should just think about it before saying they don't need At Home. Last time I broke down within 1/4 of mile, I got a flat tyre. Couldn't change it myself as the nuts had been tightened hard by machines. Car's not really in a position to be pushed. Besides, whilst I'm no expert at pushing cars, I usually have someone else in the car driving - I find it extremely difficult pushing whilst at the wheel especially if it is anything other than a straight level road.
Not having At Home is a high inconvinience and in many cases a problem as few can cope with the situation on their own.
People can make up their own mind, but I certainly don't think that its worth going for breakdown cover without At Home.

I don't have the At Home product in my cover but the AA have twice been out to resolve my car problems when the vehicle was parked and couldn't be moved fromour private driveway.
AA man and secondly contractor never mentioned there was a problem. When calling to report the faults and request attention,Itold the operator that the car was on the main road, I then met mechanic there and showed him to the car.
I was suprised on the second occasion that a contractor and not an actual AA van arrived. I thought that they didn't sub contract out?One hundred years from now it won't matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank, nor what my clothes looked like but the world may be a little better because, I was important in the life of a child.0 -
How about registering the At Home product at the address of a relative you rarely see. Then you're covered at home0

The Quidco link to the AA takes you to a page which no longer seems to exist on aa.com !0
