Landlord with-holding my deposit...

I would like to know if anyone can shed a bit of light on where I stand with this -

I paid a £300 deposit for a room in a shared house. The landlord does not live at the property.

I have not signed any paper work. I moved in on 25th June 2010, originally by email I stated I was looking to move for 12 months but it has since transpired that I need to move.

He agreed that I could move out early on 1st September. I have been offered the room I am moving to a little earlier (2 weeks earlier) and so as I am moving even earlier he is deducting £150 from my deposit. (£75per week)

He then wants to take another £50 off me for a lock he fitted at my request (due to the fact I have to take hardware from work and I wanted it as secure as possible)

NOW he is sending me texts saying that my email that said I wanted to move for 12 months would stand up in court against me leaving early and that I am not entitled to any of my deposit back.

Can he do this? He has not put my deposit in to any sort of protection scheme
