My credit rating is a Z :(

So basically I was in a violent relationship many years ago (7 years ago it ended). My ex was a wa**er to put it mildly. I finally left him when he killed my unborn child by punching me in the stomach. Whilst I was with him I had a very good credit rating and had credit cards etc (i had just started uni to). To cut a long story short he stole my money, often withdrew money from by bank as he knew my pins, opened up catalogues in my name and ripped them off and left me very little to live on so that I couldnt afford to pay the bills. When I finally got the strength to get out of the relationship I had nothing and was in debt up to my eye balls. I moved area and tried to build a new life for myself.

Fast forward 7 years and my credit rating is terrile. I had hoped that 1 day I could gradually repair it but was told today by the bank that my credit rating (which they score in alphabetical order) is at z!!!

Is there anything I can do to repair my credit? i cant even open a current bank account its so poor.

Its hit home that i'll never be able to get a mortgage and such like and its far to late to take my ex to court over it, not that i could ever face him again after everything he did. :(

I'm not aware of any banks issuing a "z" behavioural score , most are 0-9 (Lloyds , HBOS , COOP ,Nat West)or 0-100 (HSBC) my score at Santander is 650 , I am unsure of their range

"z" on a credit reference agency file usually indicates dormant

Hi there. Sorry to hear about everything that has happened, but it's always best to face up to thing and then begin to improve your situation.

You say that you split 7 years ago. Items start falling off your credit file after 6 years, so you will hopefully see your credit rating slowly improving as this happens (so long as you are keeping up with things at the moment.

Have you obtained a copy of your credit file yet, so that you can see exactly what is showing on there/owed?

Others will be along shortly to give you good advice I'm sure.

    Good luck with it

If it's the same thing I think you mean, then all bank customers have one.

The scale is between 1-10, with 1 being lowest risk.

"Z" on Natwest/RBS accounts means you are not eligible for anything at all (Bad debt). The normal score is 0-10.

Someone new to the bank will start of on 0, and this score will change on a monthly basis depending on their account conduct. 1 is the best, 5-6 is standard, 10 is the worst.

If you can, I'd get a copy of your credit file - a one off paper copy costs £2 I think, and from there you will be able to see how your finances are.
Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion :p

    Hi

Sounds like you've had it pretty rough. The only way to deal with things and to start trying to build up a good credit history is probably going to be to order your credit files. You also need to make sure you are not showing on file as financially associated with your ex anymore (as I bet he is still doing the same stuff and still has a terrible file)

First is anyone chasing you for outstanding debts at your current address? debt collectors letters or anything? are you aware is any of your creditors ever took you to court, had CCJs granted against you?

If you do have any CCJs and any bailiffs ever do show up them do not let them in the house for anything. Talk to them through a window or even the letter box if needs be.

Yes I am getting letters from 3 or 4 different debt collection agencies 1 of which really worries me, its from barclay card I had that my ex ran up (well bar for £400 of it but I paid more than that off). Its for 4.5 grand . I know I have ccjs and I know the barclaycard debt is around 6-7 years old. I tried ordering my credit report online but it said I needed to make contact to confirm my identity?? im too scared and embarassed to go into the bank and speak about this incase I end up with the baliffs at my door.

How can I build my credit back up if I cant get a normal account? The guy at the bank said they use a alphabetical letter system and mine is at bottom at z and that with a basic account that I have I cant build my credit back up.

If your relationship ended 7 years ago, have you tried to pay off anything since that time?

This is not a dig, it is an ask because if no payment has been made towards the account in the last 6 years E&W), the debt is statute barred and you do not have to pay it (unless there is a CCJ out there).

You can get a basic bank account because they do not do credit checks. This needs to be with a bank with which you have no prior relationship.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

And you can find the details of CCJs by going on the Registry Trust on-line. This costs but is a public file so requires no details from you.

No when i left there i left everything behind and had nothing. I know i have ccjs but i dont even know what a ccj is or what it means. Will i have to pay all this debt off and if not how do i get some of it wiped?
