Unpaid child tax credit

Hi, Im wondering if any one could help?

My daughter is coming up to 19 and has been in college since leaving school in 2009, on the 13th May 2009 I called the Child Tax Credit office to inform them that she has left school and now going to college to study Travel and Tourism, I told them I thought it was a diploma but not 100% sure. When I called on the 25th of July 2011 (this year) to tell them she is no longer in college I was told I wasn't being paid for my daughter since she left school due to not confirming what type of course she was doing. I have lost a lot of money and wondered what I should do to try to reclaim it or if there is anything I can do? or do I just put it down to what I didn't have I wont miss:(

Thanks Tina

I think for most benefits its a 6 month maximum backdating period, and they are usually quite strict about not backdating due to not knowing you were eligible.

It might be different for child tax credits though, I'm sure someone will confirm.

Did you not notice you weren't receiving the money?

Unfortunately I didn't, it was a time in my life that I was going through a lot upset so it got over looked and I suppose I just accepted what they were paying me as correct!

    We learn from our mistakes!

    thank you

Not sure if it's the same thing but Last year I was backdated about 7 thousand.

We claimed in the first ever year of child tax credit but the following year they said they had over paid us and said we were entitled to no more as we were paying it back.

The following 2 years I think it was we claimed again and was told no entitlement so we stopped claiming.

Anyway last year we claimed again and this time said they were wrong to have not given money and repaid it all :D:T:eek:

Same thing happened to a friend of mine so it's worth checking. Her daughter was doing a foundation degree at college with a year of A levels before that.

Definitely look into it, I don't see why it can't work for you.
