Unusual ceiling wiring or a bodge?

If I were a betting man I would say that the black/green cable goes to a switch and the others are the supply as in post 2.
If this is correct then both the wires should have red sleeving on them as they are live wires when connected, have a look in the switch will confirm this.
The two bare wires are earth and should have green/yellow sleeves, there is probably a bare wire with the green and black pair too if you cut back the insulation.0 -
The wiring doesn't look too fantastic
I would suggest you get somoene in who can test for earth loop impedance- there is a fair chance there may be a poor / non existent earth on this.
You should use a competent person for the work, links below

Hi everyone thank you for the info so far!
I have managed to get the new light working, however, no lights in kitchen or bathroom (which are both downstairs, below that room). I connected the black / green in various combinations. . .with no success!!!
Any ideas please?0 -

Try some more combinations with 6 wires there are 720 combinations to try.
I ignore the earth because you know they are not needed to get it to work.0 -

Second time you've said that. What makes you think OP will listen this time?
