fed up with mistakes in my wages!

 I'm fed up with so many mistakes being made with my wages. The latest being that for 3 months no national insurance has been taken out. I only noticed this month and when I queried it I was told 'Oh dear I don't know how that's happened but you'll have to pay it back' (the total will be approx £600).

A few months ago I realised I had been underpaid my essential car users allowance (because a colleague and I compared wage slips) I have been paid back for this up to April last year - but I have just found out I was underpaid the year before too and have done nothing about this. Is there a time limit on claiming for things like this?

It's a small organisation I work for and I don't want to make any complaints but I'd like to be able to check whether there are other mistakes that I've not noticed by going back through my wage slips.

I'm wondering if there is any way I can work out myself what I should be paying in tax, pension, national insurance, student loan etc

Any advice would be welcome please, thanks Narla x

I find this site very useful

    http://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/salary.php

click on "show advanced options" to get it to take pensions and student loans into account
  • Are you a director? If so, NI is dealt with differently, but by the end of the year, correct amount will have been deducted.

Is your payroll done by a system, or manually?
If it is done by a system then appart from the actual gross figures (which you should know whether it is right by just looking at it, if it is listed line by line) that should be input manually nothing should go wrong.
The NI could be explained by the director option on the system as mentioned above.

If it is done manually, then someone is not up to the job.

I just have discovered along with many of my colleagues that we haven't been getting paid our "Recruitment & Retainment" payments. In my case for all but 4 months of the 7 years I've been working there.

Damn am I one naive sucker, what makes it worse is that in a similar instance about 2 years ago I claimed another payment that I had not been getting but should have done, and assumed that all was now ok, so I'm doubly naive!

So after many comparing of payslips with colleagues and advice from a trusted deputy manager I have gone one to be shafted from pillar to post through various departments before I actually getting through to a thing called "Human Resources" who have instructed me to e-mail them all the details and they'll look into it.

I work for the NHS, who are notorius for making inatentive mistakes when it comes to the payment of their staff. I just wish I was a bit more knowledgable about what I'm supposed to receive in my payslip and less naive.

I think you've hit the nail on the head - someone is not up to the job!
The person in question seems to be so overloaded with her work though that so many mistakes happen and to be honest I do feel sorry for her and don't want to make things difficult for her. That's why I wish I could work it out myself then I could at least be confident of the mistakes before taking it further.

Are you sure you are earning enough to pay NI, how is the payroll calculated, manually or by a program such as sage? either way if have not paid NI and you should have you have had extra in your wages, but it is unreasonable for them to expect the whole amount from you for there mistake.

Yes I'm definitely earning enough and i usually pay about £200 per month. Because of other mistakes made I initially thought I hadn't paid it because I was owed some from having the wrong tax code for a while. When i mentioned it to the finance officer she checked her computer and said 'oh there's a box that's ticked that says 'enter manually' oh I wonder why that's happened? You'll have to pay it back though'. So I'm not sure how the payroll is calculated.

    thanks for your reply

You do realise recruitment and retention premia is being phased out?

Out of interest how did you not know your post attracted it to start with?

Some has accidently ticked a box; it's an admin error. It may have been near the 'P45 received' tick box, for example. When they untick the box, the system will calculate what you owe as it would tax I think. Saying that I would still speak to the HMRC and find out how it will be deducted, or will you be expected to make a seperate payment.
