wired mouse not working properly :(

Hi,

I have searched high and low through the forum looking for an answer to my question but i have had no luck so i'm really sorry if the answer is around somewhere.

For the last few days, everytime the desktop pc is switched off the mouse stops working  The only way to get it going again is to go into the BIOS and save the default settings again. Its a wired mouse that plugs into the ps/2 port (i think thats what its called, its not a usb one) I have tried with all the mice we have in the house and none of them work  Does anyone have any suggestions of why the mouse would keep doing this?

Thanks for any help.

Never seen this problem with a mouse before but could it be the battery on the motherboard needs replacing?

When you plug the other mice in, is the PC completely off?

How old is the PC.. bios battery maybe?

Do you have a usb mouse to try?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Thanks for the replies so far :)

I'm not sure how old the pc is, we have had it for about 5 months but it was a reburbished one that we bought from the computer repair shop after our last one died. I think you can safely say we were done as it has caused us nothing but problems! I guess i will bring it back and get the guy to look at it again since it has a years warranty.. how much does anyone want to bet it is something that is not covered by the warranty?

    Thanks again,

  • I had one thet gave up the ghost as well - it was overuse I think!

I switched to a USB optical one that cost me £5 from my local Indi PC shop - it great...I should have changed it ages ago.

    Hope this helps.

If you try different wired mice, they need to be connected before booting up for them to be recognised. However as it works after resetting the BIOS, it could well be the battery need replacing, as this holds information while the PC is powered down.

If you check in Device Manager you will find that they are all using the same driver. Simply changing the hardware won't help if the drivers have a problem.

In DM delete the mouse and then reboot the PC with the mouse plugged in. It will find the "New hardware" and load a fresh set of drivers.

The BIOS battery can cause the same issues. Take it out and leave it out for half an hour. Put it back in and boot up, doing the necessary to load the mouse.

Immediately reboot and see if the problem persists. It may be that the rest will help, but not always.

Thankyou, I will try deleting the drivers and starting again with them. I cant access the battery at the moment as the pc is still under warranty and has a sticker over the compartment thing.. I dont want to do anything to invalidate it, i'm sure they will try and wriggle out of fixing it if it needs fixing without me giving them an excuse!

If it is a ball mouse it could be the insides clogging up with crud, common with ball mice.

Optical Mice something have the probelm where the surface you use them on reflects the light and causes the mouse to be near impossible to use.

If it is neither of these then buy a USB mouse as it is probably the mouse port that is gone.

Another point the mouse goes in the green port and the keyboard in the purple, some people do get that wrong, they really do.

Thanks very much, this seems to have done the trick! Well for now anyway!

Well as the title suggests the mouse is still not working properly. It now takes 5 or 6 attempts each time the pc is switched on for a mouse to be found. I tried bringing it back to the shop for them to have a look at it under the warranty but the man was insistant that it is a software problem and not covered. Does it sound likely that this is the case? I always thought the mouse was hardware. I tried explaining that it may be a problem with the battery on the motherboard but he wasnt having any of it. I ended up being escorted off the premises after mentioning that i would have to seek advise from that consumer rights place about the way he has stitched us up :rotfl:

I guess the next thing is to try changing the battery on the motherboard. I had a look at it but couldnt see a way of getting it out without forcing it. Is there a knack to getting them out? Also, are motherboard batteries all the same or would i need to bring it to the shop with me?

Sorry for all the questions but i hope someone can help me!
