electric cooker trips mains

not had a problem with cooker untill today was cooking dinner and noticed a strange smell .. .. .. a short time after the mains tripped and it seems it is the cooker as mains are fine aslong as cooker is switched off .. any ideas?

    You require to have your cooker checked by a qualified electrician.

    As in the reply to another post, the most likely cause is a blown element. If you're inclined you can detect and replace this yourself at a fraction of the price of calling someone out. I did this week, and it cost me £10.
