Tax Credit Overpayment Appeal Enquiry

Hi,
I've lurked on these forums for a while now. Unfortunately I' looking for a bit of advice.
We've been under investigation regarding the potential overpayment of child tax credits.
In the year 09/10 we incorrectly stated a redundancy amount (we thought that the whole payment was redundancy, in actual fact only part was and the remainder was taxable) This resulted in us getting a lump sum at the end of the year which we now need to pay back - not an issue.
However for year 10/11 we put our combined income to £48k. In august when the lump sum was issued for 09/10 our monthly payments also went up. When queried at the time I was told that the figures were correct. Now, at the end of the year our combined earnings were £3k higher (due to productivity bonus) they are now stating that we were overpayed and are required to pay back £6.5k .
How is this possible and where can I go to get advice on the matter? The CAB have been pretty much useless to date!
I look forward to any helpful responses!
