Would air con add to value?

I'm thinking of installing a split air con system, say about £500, so you have just the blower inside and the compressor on the wall outside (hidden by plants!)

Do you think this will be attractive feature to future buyers, or will they assume it'll just be expensive to run?

I wouldn't think it would make much difference to a prospective buyer. Don't put it in if that is your only reason.

If you want to put it in for your benefit - go ahead. I've had a free standing unit, venting through the wall, for some years now, in my lounge. The only slight drawback is that it is a bit noisy. To be honest I haven't noticed any dramatic increse in my electricity bills either.
I am about to move house and am going to get a split unit, as you describe,
    fitted in my new lounge.
  • It wouldn't appeal to me to be honest and I doubt it would add a great deal of value, you'd probably get your £500 back but some buyers might assume it is expensive to run or that the property has a problem that requires an air con system to be running (buyers can I have strange thoughts, I know I have had them!!)
What type of property do you live in, out of interest?

Very modest, a mid-terrace 2-bed town house. I was thinking of the air-con for upstairs, main bedroom which is south facing. I'm very hot in bed (oh, matron!)

Home improvements add value in that you will sell your home a bit quicker than the competition but I dont think your house would go on at a higher price than a neighbour's identical house because you had air con.

    Spot on.
England gets a couple of hot weeks in the summer.
  • We're thinking about doing this in our new house, once we move. SWMBO feels the heat in summer.

I'm hoping to find an exchanger that supports more than one inside unit, but I'm not sure if such a thing exists in a DIY product.
