Weddings abroad - any advice?

We're going to the travel agents on Monday for some information about booking a wedding abroad.

Doe anyone have any experience of wedding packages? Companies to avoid? Great experiences etc? Any recommendations.

I would do some research online first, so you have some ideas on pricing etc before you get to a travel agents and have them possibly talk you into something - maybe leave your wallet at home! :)

Have you decided which country you are going to get married abroad in first? As obviously there are tons of companies in each place.

I got married in Hawaii in April this year. I didnt use a travel agents I just booked directly with a wedding planner over there. Cut out the middle man if you can! They were fantastic and I have amazing photos of us and our guests in the sunshine.

My wedding was exactly as I wanted it to be times 100! We had humpback whales jumping in the background - wouldnt have got that in the UK! Our guests said it was the best wedding theyd ever been to because it was actually fun to them to go to, instead of the usual wedding at home - ceremony followed by cheesy disco.

So I can definitely recommend it! :)

We definately won't be booking it on Monday -we're in the middle of trying to buy a house :) Though ideally we would like to aim for a wedding next week (back end of).

We've decided we're going away somewhere. I'd like it to be in Asia, but need to consider families etc. I'm just a bit frightened of not being able to see things before, if you know what I mean. We definately DON'T want the cheesy disco - we went to one yesterday and it confirmed those thoughts!

P.s you're wedding sounds lovely. My cousin lives in Hawaii and it's stunning

It just seems so much cheaper, better weather and less people! Which all appeal to us

For those of you who are either thinking of getting married abroad or already have done, would you expect the whole family to be there even if they couldn't afford it?
My OH's Sis is getting married abroad next week, and we simply couldn't afford to go and are getting grief for it:(:(
It would've cost at at least £1500 inc putting the dogs in kennels, but we simply cannot afford it:(

Can be on the beach - guests or no guests ad not too far so it keeps the cost down

Exotic Asia is usually 2 flights and best part of 24 hours to get there with transfers etc.

That means guests need a week off work minimum and flights at least £600 each.

Depending on where you chose a nice selection of vaccinations.

If you are paying that's fine but it is a very expensive option to get there. Unlike the Caribbean no charter flights or direct tourist flights.

Where in Asia are you thinking? Done a lot of it over the years.

We were in the 4 seasons in sharm el sheik (so africa not Asia). There was a wedding. Most guests seemed to be on a cheaper package tour at other nearby hotels.

What I would say is that if you go a long way you will have the family with you for the whole holiday. That might be what you want.

We are really looking forward to it & will hopefully have about 30 guests & we know the weather will be wonderful.

recommend chamonix france in winter or summer. there is an english church close to railway station[handy for arriving guests] and a great place for the reception is the restaurant labrador at the golf club-5 mins away. they are experienced at running english speaking wedding parties-fantastic mountain views.

NEXT WEEK? :eek:You do mean next YEAR don't you? :D

I think you will need time to sort out paperwork. In fact, if you are dead set on doing it abroad, the paperwork is the hardest part, I've found!

I'm another vote for Lindos, Rhodes but it is very popular (especially St Pauls Chapel). But then, as it is a popular resort, it will probably be more affordable for family and friends than some of the more exotic locations.

If you can afford it I would recommend using a local wedding organiser (there are several there with a variety of packages) as they will deal with all your bookings and can help if there are problems with delays or changes.

We were there last year to meet our organiser and a young couple were there getting married through Thomson or Thomas Cook (can't remember which) but they didn't know what time they were getting married because the travel companies don't seem to book ahead like local organisers.

    Congratulations and good luck. x
