I need help with finding a good mascara!

I used to have long ,thickish eyelashes. I used to use quite a 'natural looking' mascara otherwise I would look as if I was wearing false lashes.
However, 4 years ago I had chemotherapy and lost all my hair, including lashes. They grew back after a few months but they have never been the same since!
When they grow to a half decent length they fall out and have to grow again, they are also quite sparse. I have tried numerous mascaras that are supposed to make you look as if you are wearing false eyelashes ( the types I used to avoid!) but nothing seems to make them look thicker.
I don't want to go down the route of false lashes.
Has anyone else been in the same situation or can you just recommend a good mascara that could help?
Sorry for the long winded post
Thanks

  • Clinique, as their formulations seem to coat each lash enough to see them clearly, but not gloop or clump together. You can build it up in several coats as well, without too much gunkyness.

Mine looked pretty rubbish for a while due to meds and that was when I switched to Clinique, as seeing them properly detracted away from there not being as many.

I also switched to using oil to removed mascara rather than lotions or liquids and that reduced the amount of losses as well.

    Hope that helps.

  • I agree...Clinque High Impact Mascara is really good & is ok for sensitive eyes. I usually buy small trial sizes off ebay, as I never use the full size ones before they go out of date.

I also use oil based eye makeup remover & do find it better for my eyelashes. I have always had weak sparse lashes, so have to becareful what i use. I always avoid waterproof mascaras as they are harsher on the lashes.

I'm on a tight budget and can't really afford to use Clinique products so I use Avon's SuperCurlacious and SuperShock mascaras. They give the appearance of length and don't clump the lashes.

I'll admit that I used to be a rep a few years ago, but it took a lot of free samples of different types of mascaras before I found something I was willing to pay for lol. I won't go any higher than £4 inc p&p on ebay though.

    HTH :)

I used to use Revlon Big Brush but now I try to use Maybeline volume express. Revlon is better than maybeline on my thought. revlon dries faster once you apply it while maybeline takes quite longer. and Revlon can make my lash loos thicker. Maybeline is pretty good actually but just don't like with how my lash looks like. It can make my lash looks longer but quite sparse? Perhaps it's because the brush.

DiorShow. For the false eyelash look it wins hands down every time! Not so easy to remove though, your gonna need a designated eye makeup remover and a mirror for that one!

I can also vouch for the Chanel Immitable being good too- less bold but more definition with lashes and a tad easier to remove.

Max Factors new mascara (comes in a purple tube) is OK, would buy it again but the more expensive ones do seem to reap the rewards in my experience.

Maybelline are OK but a bit clumpy, you need to brush your lashes and dab the brush over a tissue before use.
Cliniques mascaras are fairly good (all aside from the I-will-blind-you white tubed version, if anyone knows how it works please explain!) They also have a good one which is hald brush, half comb, really one of a kind and really nice. Only issue I have with Clinique is that I think they may have changed their formulas a few years back, they now flake on me when they didn't before which is a shame as it means they are not suitable for me. (Huge hazard for rimless glasses where the flakes get trapped).
Rimmels Sexy Curves mascara is OK to, I found it a bit painful/pricky to apply but it is possible to get used to that. Brilliant with definition though and easy to remove.

I think it is me who get the tips. :D

I agree with Jenniewb, I love Dior Show mascara but my budget won't stretch to that at the moment! Boots No 17 Va Va Voom mascara is a pretty good alternative!
Maybe try one of the new mascaras which include the additional moisturisers etc to make your eyelashes grow, they're more expensive but could help.
i wish my bank account could keep up with my Rockstar Lifestle!

My fave ever mascara is YSL faux cils effet mascara...it's amazing! It's quite expensive but you can usually find it cheaper online. Be warned though, it does dry out fairly quickly once opened, so probably best avoided if you won't be using it everyday (I normally use mine up before it gets to the drying out wand going clumpy stage).
There are mascara's on the market that promise to thicken lashes/help them grow as well as doing all the usual mascara stuff, but I've never tried them so can't really comment. The only other mascara I'd recommend is Max factor false lash effect mascara...similar to the YSL but half the price.

You say you don't want to go down the false lashes route...but why not give them a try? I have naturally thick long lashes but I don't have the time for mascara some mornings....so I wear falsies...I'm so used to them that it literally takes me 10 seconds to put on each one. They withstand even 14 hour shifts, and a lot of the ones I have are actually less 'dramatic' and noticeable than my own lashes with mascara on. You could try ardell...which are very inexpensive, and made of real human hair. There are lots of natural looking ones available...or you can trim them/cut them down. My fave ones for a natural look are MAC 7 lash. And I find that using falsies works out cheaper than using mascara everyday (especially YSL:P)...I don't put mascara on my falsies so can usually re-use them as much as needed,or wash them in baby shampoo if need be.

I hope you don't mind me saying/suggesting this....but my sister (who had chemo/radiotherapy) is involved with a charity for 16-24 year olds with cancer, and they put her forward for a 'makeover' day. She spent an afternoon with make up artists, and they showed her and the group how to overcome things like hair loss/eyebrow loss etc with makeup. They gave them all a make up lesson, and then everyone received goody bags....filled with chanel, benefit, lancome and loads of other make up items and beauty products, all free of course. It really made my sister's day. Maybe you could try to find out if there's a similar scheme in your area?

Btw, my sister who has been in a similar situation to you uses accesorize mascara...or claire's accessories....not sure which it is but she says it's amazing! I will try to find out exactly what it is.

Sorry this post is so rambling and long! Good luck with your search:)
