Ant powder and plants

Right, in our greenhouse, we have a little bed in the floor not very wide probably just over a foot and in here we grow the peppers. They have started to flower and fruit and look quite healthy. Dearest husband decided (brains of Britain) to try and tackle the ant problem in the garden and has put ant powder all down the side of the bed, then the plants have been watered. I am thinking roots absorbing water that has ant powder/poison diluted into it and feeding/producing peppers that we are supposed to eat.....:( Would you still eat them?
Hasn't bloomin worked anyway the ants went away and came back again - but I am not so sure about feeding the family the peppers since they have been being watered which will have the ant powder in.
Whats everyone else think?

You could google the ingredients (mectin) i think and see what comes up. The powder is deadly to bugs but i am reassured that it poses no danger to my chooks as it is a great red mite killer.
