Looking to Start a job but need a place to live

Ok so here is my dilemma.

I've been offered a job in Stockport doing what i do best :P (IT) but i currently lodge in Stretford, Manchester and i have to move out of there by this Saturday.

Now i have alternatives i.e another friend who will let me stay at theirs for a time but unfortunately they live in Hulme which is just as far to Stockport.

To add to this i suffer from partially controlled epilepsy which prevents me from driving to work as that would have been the easiest option so i'm stuck with Public Transport that takes on average 1hr 30mins to get there.

So this is ideally what i want to do:

Get a house-share or 1 bed accommodation in Stockport and work for a month to pay the rent but in the meantime look for maybe a place to get a loan or grant to help with my first month and deposit.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i can do because i really want to get out of this jobless, homeless life and get my own life back on track.

All help appreciated.

Okay, is there anything that you can sell? Playstation, games, TV, stuff like that?

If you get a houseshare or become a lodger, then I'd think that you're talking £350 per month in Stockport, so £350 is your first month's rent and then maybe another £350 for a deposit. That's £700 for a start and you'd need cash for living for the first month. Let's say you need £1K in order to start this job.

Do you have any friends or family who could loan you this? You could pay it back over the next 3 months or so when your salary comes in.

Do you have a credit card? Would not normally advise this but if it is the only way that you can take up this job then you might just have to do it.

I do sympathise - I remember being horrified when I first started work in a new area and having to stump up cash for all sorts. I didn't have any suitable work clothes either so had to buy a couple of outfits also. Charity shops are your friend.

Good luck mate, sounds like you are ready to turn a corner in your life - this is just the final hurdle to clear before you can do that.

    Appreciate the quick response :)

The only things i have right now to my name is a Laptop with XP & Zorin OS which i am using to apply for jobs, clothes, mobile phone and a suit.

The reason i am in this situation is because things weren't working out between my girlfriend of 4 years and i had to move out to prevent things getting much worse.

As i am not a guy who likes to leave people stranded (except for myself it seems, lol) i left her the TV, PS3 and Surround Sound system so she could pay the Sky bill i had to leave behind.

Also she has 2 kids and i really wouldn't want to leave her in debt and unable to provide for them so thats the other reason i left it all behind.

Friends & Family is a no go as my Father is suffering from a slipped disk in his back and has been unable to work for the last 2 months meaning he's in more debt than i am!

My brother is hopeless and always thinks when someone asks him for money they just want to take advantage so thats not an option.

I don't have a credit card of any kind as i'm struggling at the moment to clear a £50 overdraft (lol sad isn't it) to keep my current account active. Soesn't sound like much but when you have absolutely nothing its amazing how hard is is to get £50 :P

Move in with your pal and commute until you've saved up enough for your first month's rent and deposit.

Difficult to commute when you really don't have enough.

Plus a commute daily there and back from Hulme to Stockport can become costly :(

Also most jobs these days or at least the jobs I work in require you to work 5 weeks in advance before you are paid.

    5 Weeks @ 5 days = 25 days x lets say £7 a day = £175 and thats assuming it would be £7 a day not including food.

It doesn't look like you have much choice. You are moving out of your accommodation at the weekend and don't have anywhere else lined up except to stay with a pal. You have a job to go to so you're gong to have to sort out an overdraft facility with your bank to tide you over until your first pay-check.

I can understand you don't want to ask a new employer for a sub, but the bank may be sympathetic, assuming you have a formal job offer letter, salary details and so on.

It will help if the employer is known name, or at least reasonably well-established.

If they are well-respected locally, you could walk into a nearby branch of a different bank and say something like: "I want to open an account to pay my wages into, and I need a small overdraft to tide me over for the first month."

It's slightly unusual to lend straight away to a new customer, but not unheard of.

Yep, a chat with the bank is in order. If your only debts are your small overdraft then that's good. And with a decent job offer behind you, you'd hope that the bank would able be help you out with a small loan. You'll be able to pay it back within a year easily.

And no, I don't think it is sad that you are struggling to pay off an overdraft of 50 quid. I think it is admirable that it bothers you and you are obviously doing your best to pay it off despite very little money coming in at the moment. I've been skint before and know how it feels.

Things do get better though. You've already done the hard work - getting a decent job in this climate is a great achievement on your part.

    Congratulations on the Job.

OK looks like you will need to stay with your mate initially.
Once you start the job you may be able to sort out a lift, so the commute may only be for a short time, also 1hr 30mins wouldn't be out of the ordinary in London, but I agree not ideal for the long term. On the plus side it is summer, so light nights won't make it as bad.

In terms of payday, assuming it will be monthly some companies pay on a fixed day each month ?(mine was 21st) but could be 28th or last working day, so could only be 3 weeks till you get paid. Make sure they have your correct bank details asap.

Are you currently unemployed on JSA? If so will the job centre be able to help? I've heard that you can still claim to tide you over till payday, may be able to get a crisis loan or something to cover commuting till you get paid, worth asking.

If leaving a job, did you work say a week in hand, so will be due extra pay on leaving or holiday pay for any unused holidays.

I agree move in with your mate and do the commute, thousands of people commute to London and other places every day on commutes that take that long. And youll only have to do it for a month or so!

Dont worry about your £50 overdraft right now, lots of people are in much more debt, you can clear it as you start working. and I agree with the other posters about asking if the bank or a new bank can extend your overdraft for now, you can always ask them to make it temporary.

Have you checked if you can get a monthly travel pass, it might save you a few quids.

You might get paid sooner than you think. Is the salary coming in going to be enough to justify any loans.

Just how much rent do you think you can afford ?

Have you tried asking for a relocation allowance from your employers ?

As a last resort, I would say check with local B&Bs if they can offer you a cheaper weekly rate.
